ALL YOU NEED IS KILL (2025)

Together with Kaboom Animation Festival we bring the best anime to the big screen! First came Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s ‘light novel’ in 2004. Ten years later, we saw adaptations as manga, American graphic novel, and the Hollywood blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow. And now, an anime directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Each time, the story starts over, but slightly different. Which, funnily enough, is exactly the premise of All You Need Is Kill. In its Groundhog Day (1993) meets video game concept, each time you die, your day starts over, you just know a little bit more about what’s coming (something about an alien invader and the total annihilation of Earth). The two most significant changes made by Akimoto and his team are that the main characters aren’t military anymore, but civilian, and that the lead role has shifted from Keiji to Rita. With as an additional story layer the fact that Rita – although the word isn’t explicitly mentioned – is depressed. Which neatly fits the pattern of each day feeling the same, and having no interest at all in tomorrow. Which effectively turns All You Need Is Kill – with all its clearly choreographed fight scenes and the angular, sketchy design for which Studio 4°C is known – into a series of therapy sessions (after all, therapy also requires endless repetition for even minor progress): unless Rita wants to keep dying for the rest of her life (‘Live. Die. Repeat’ was Edge of Tomorrow’s concise slogan), she has no choice but to take an interest in every single detail of today in an attempt to finally make it to tomorrow.Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. ALL YOU NEED IS KILL (2025)

Een anime die het concept van "Groundhog Day" combineert met een videogame-achtige premisse, waarin de hoofdpersoon telkens opnieuw sterft en de dag opnieuw beleeft met nieuwe kennis. Deze adaptatie focust op burgers en verschuift de nadruk naar het personage Rita, wiens innerlijke strijd tegen depressie centraal staat in haar poging om de cyclus te doorbreken.

Primair onderwijs en SBO

Neem je leerlingen in november mee op ontdekkingsreis naar het filmtheater en ontdek samen bijzondere verhalen waarmee ze elkaar en anderen beter leren begrijpen! De films worden aangeboden in combinatie met nagesprekken in de zaal en digitaal lesmateriaal voor in de klas. Vanaf 15 juni vind je hier het programma voor 2026 en kun je je klas inschrijven.

Een visueel verbluffende animefilm van Makoto Shinkai, bekend als 'de nieuwe Miyazaki'. Het verhaal volgt een jong meisje dat een mysterieuze onderwereld ontdekt en leert omgaan met verlies en eenzaamheid. Een emotionele reis vol kleur en fantasie.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011)

Een prachtige anime-film van Makoto Shinkai waarin we samen met de jonge Asuna en haar kat Mimi een multiculturele onderwereld verkennen. De film gaat over het leren omgaan met dood en eenzaamheid, met de visuele schoonheid die Shinkai beroemd heeft gemaakt.

Special: Feit of fictie?

Een interactief filmprogramma waarin studenten leren hoe ze feit en fictie in documentaires kunnen onderscheiden. Aan de hand van cameravoering, montage, geluid en scenario gaan ze in gesprek met een filmmaker over de kracht van beeld en werkelijkheid.

It took Amy Berg ten years to gain access to the archive of Jeff Buckley (1966-1997) through his heirs. She draws heavily on the material for this documentary about the life of the man who became a musical icon in a short space of time—thanks to a heavenly voice that only grew stronger at the top of its range, one phenomenal album, Grace, and his death at the age of 30, which left the music world stunned.Using energetic editing, the film strings together moments from his childhood to his tragic death. There is footage of a 14-year-old Buckley singing “Roxanne” by The Police, and of his performances at the New York underground café Sin-é, where he would try out his own material, as well as audio recordings of messages he left on answering machines.These clips reveal the more personal side of Buckley, which also emerges in interviews with former band members, musician friends like Ben Harper and Aimee Mann, his mother Mary Guibert, and his former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser. Deze cultklassieker uit 1989 van Spike Lee is angstaanjagend actueel en zet aan tot nadenken over racisme en verantwoordelijkheid. De broeierige sfeer van de film krijgt een extra laag in de rust van het Amsterdamse Bostheater. Een tijdloos portret dat je gezien moet hebben.
