The filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, who sadly passed away last year, serves up all the rock clichés, taken to the extreme, thereby satirising the musical pretensions of hard rock and heavy metal as well as the rock documentaries of the 1980s. In the film, the (fictional) British metal band Spinal Tap is followed by the dead-serious director Marty Di Bergi, played by Reiner himself, who tries to portray the band with delightful naivety. The not-particularly-bright rockers give us a glimpse into the world of groupies, Marshall stacks, shiny spandex, backcombed men’s hair and sold-out stadium shows.Especially for the "41st anniversary", the film has been remastered and remixed, as a teaser for the long-awaited sequel ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’, which was released last year.Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. First of all, he needs musicians and singers. When he finds a guitarist, a bassist, three female singers, a male singer and a trumpeter, things start to take off. Slowly but surely, The Commitments work their way to the top. Ten years later, we saw adaptations as manga, American graphic novel, and the Hollywood blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow. And now, an anime directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Each time, the story starts over, but slightly different. Which, funnily enough, is exactly the premise of All You Need Is Kill. In its Groundhog Day (1993) meets video game concept, each time you die, your day starts over, you just know a little bit more about what’s coming (something about an alien invader and the total annihilation of Earth). The two most significant changes made by Akimoto and his team are that the main characters aren’t military anymore, but civilian, and that the lead role has shifted from Keiji to Rita. With as an additional story layer the fact that Rita – although the word isn’t explicitly mentioned – is depressed. Which neatly fits the pattern of each day feeling the same, and having no interest at all in tomorrow. Which effectively turns All You Need Is Kill – with all its clearly choreographed fight scenes and the angular, sketchy design for which Studio 4°C is known – into a series of therapy sessions (after all, therapy also requires endless repetition for even minor progress): unless Rita wants to keep dying for the rest of her life (‘Live. Die. Hoe worden vrouwen met een beperking gerepresenteerd in films en series? Tijdens deze editie van Beeldbestormers wordt hierover in gesprek gegaan. Beeldbestormers is het film- en debatprogramma van Vrouwen in Beeld en Point of VieW dat de blik wil kantelen, en kijkt hoe filmtaal werkt en hoe dit doorwerkt in onze maatschappelijke opvattingen. De avond begint met een performance en twee korte films, gevolgd door een gesprek met gasten uit de filmwereld en de academische wereld over representatie en inclusie.
Een avond met drie documentaires die de strijd voor Caribische kustlijnen, gemeenschappen en zelfbeschikking belichten. Van de geprivatiseerde stranden van Jamaica tot gentrificatie in Puerto Rico, de films tonen de strijd tegen kolonialisme en voor het behoud van land en identiteit.
